Act now: Hillary pressuring DNC (again) to count FLA, MI

Sat May 03, 2008 at 08:47:18 PM PDT

For kicks, I signed up to get Hillary's emails a few weeks ago -- just to try and understand what on Earth she might be telling people to make them think that she's still in this race, and so on. Today, I got the following email asking for my support to "count" Michigan and Florida's votes, and asking for me to write the DNC.

Of course, I immediately sent a letter to the DNC asking for just the opposite.

I also quoted the McAullife passage saying that Mark Nicholas dug up

"I'm going outside the primary window," [Michigan Sen. Carl Levin] told me definitively.

"If I allow you to do that, the whole system collapses," I said. "We will have chaos. I let you make your case to the DNC, and we voted unanimously and you lost."

As Kos and others have pointed out, we can't break the stranglehold that Iowa and NH have if we let states flaunt the rules. Of course, I also let them know how much I had donated to Obama and other candidates, and how this support would follow Obama and other progressive candidates, rather than the DNC should they entertain this silly idea.

I don't know enough about the politics of this to say whether we should band together and make our intentions known via a counter email campaign, or ignore this since the race is basically over. Either way I wanted folks to be aware of what Hillary's up to. Full letter below (with editorial comments)..."Every Vote Should Count"

Dear Kurt,
Michigan & Florida - Make Sure They Have a Voice!

It is a bedrock American principle: we are all equal in the voting booth. No matter where you were born or how much money you were born into, no matter the color of your skin or where you worship, your vote deserves to count.

((editorial comment: Unless you are a "boutique state", caucus, or did not vote for Hillary))

But millions of people in Florida and Michigan who went to the polls aren't being heard. As it now stands, the delegates they elected won't be seated at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August -- and that's just not fair to those voters.

(( but it is somehow fair to reward states for flaunting the rules, and to go against your own campaign in making these requests. You're saying it's somehow fair to the voters of Michigan to count a vote where you were the only real contender on the ballot. Seriously? We are to believe that voters' rights are what you care about, after having dismissed over 1/2 the electorate already, and having been linked to various voter disenfranchisement efforts? ))

The people of Michigan and Florida must have a voice in selecting our nominee for president. I have repeatedly called for seating their delegates.

(( How magnanimous of you))

Soon, the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee will hear challenges regarding the seating of Florida and Michigan delegates.

((And already your campaign chair made his thoughts on the topic known. Have they changed? why??))

It is critical that the DNC make a final decision in May before the final primaries in early June so that Florida and Michigan voters have a say in deciding our nominee.

(( It's done. You lost.))

Send a message to the DNC telling them that you support seating Florida and Michigan delegates at the convention -- and the decision should be made soon as possible this month.

This is such an important principle, and I appreciate you standing up with me and the people of Florida and Michigan.

(( Yes. We are to believe that Now of all times you have decided to run a principled campaign. We should ignore the long list of lies that you have told and somehow believe that you're acting out of a concern for democracy here?  Seriously, those of us living in the reality - based community expect a little better than this.))

Sincerely,

Hillary
